Desiccant and Dehydration:

Rio Tinto Alcan Activated Alumina is utilized for dehydration in a number of applications for both gas and organic liquid streams where the presence of H2O is considered harmful. Some of these applications included the following:

Sulfur Removal:
ActiGuard Claus:
provides sulfur removal with high macroporosity activated alumina to prevent the loss of activity due to pore blockage of glossy carbon and condensed sulfur build up. The macroporosity coupled with engineered mesopore structure maximizes catalytic activity and guarantees excellent sulfur conversion rates in all standard and sub dewpoint Claus plant configurations.

Bulletin:

ActiGuard S: designed to supplement or replace existing methods of sulfur removal in both refinery and petrochemical applications. The product will effectively and economically removes sulfur compounds including COS, H2S, CS2 and mercaptans present in trace concentrations (up to 100 ppm). Actiguard S is also an effective desiccant material and is capable of adsorbing water and sulfur compounds simultaneously to provide a dry, high purity feedstock suitable for downstream polymerization.

HF Removal:
ActiGuard HF:
removes residual HF and organic fluorides from the refinery alkylation unit. It is designed specifically to allow rapid diffusion of HF to the interior of the pellets to increase adsorption capacity. The improved diffusion rate increases efficiency and provides complete fluoride removal from your process stream.
It is also well suited as a dry scrubbing agent for environmental control applications. It can be used to reduce fluoride emissions from industrial processes such as brazing and welding.

HCl Removal:
ActiGuard HCl:
is a promoted activated alumina product designed to trap both inorganic and organic chloride impurities in a process stream maximizing uptake capacity per unit volume of product. High HCl and H2O uptake capacity provides equipment protection for downstream equipment and extended run times.
This product can be utilized in numerous HCl removal applications, most common being liquid and gas reformers.

TBC Removal:
ActiGuard TBC: surface chemistry and density provide two functions in the production of styrene. It removes 5 – 20 ppm of the inhibitor, TBC from the monomer in order to initiate polymerization. Dehydration is also provided removing 100 – 200 ppm of H2O to prepare monomer for polymerization process.

Purification of Olefins / Polar Compounds:
ActiGuard 600PC
and ActiGuard 650PC are the newest generation adsorbents manufactured using blend of molecular sieve and activated alumina. The most common applications of these products are in removal of trace impurities from olefin streams where the use of only molecular sieve or activated alumina is not possible. In most cases, no preloading procedure is required for having the adsorbent vessel in service.
In order to capture various size molecules of impurities, large pore opening zeolite is used in the manufacturing process.

Depending upon the impurities present, composite bed of various ActiGuard products are normally recommended for hydrogen purification application.

Arsenic Removal Potable Water
ActiGuard AAFS50
iron enhanced activated alumina with high arsenic capacity and low cost make it the most economical adsorption route for arsenic removal. AAFS50 is designed for single pass use, landfill disposal, passes both TCLP and California WET.

Fluoride Removal Potable Water
ActiGuard Fluorograde an adsorbent of metals including fluoride from potable water. Regeneration is normally used to operate at the most cost efficient levels. Fluorograde is used to simultaneously lower fluoride and arsenic to acceptable levels in one treatment.

Storm Water / Site / Industrial Effluent Remediation
ActiGuard AAFS50 has proven efficient in remediation applications including groundwater site clean ups and storm water protection where adsorption of metals including arsenic, zinc, silica, copper, lead and selenium need to be reduced. It has also proven useful in phosphate and nitrate reduction.
